RESEARCH · PILOT · VALIDATION

A grant pathway for resilient cooling intelligence.

CoolGrid Dubai is exploring how a university-led consortium and an operator-defined pilot could turn a critical cooling challenge into credible, independently reviewed evidence.

THE OFFICIAL FRAMEWORK

What the Dubai Resilience Challenge Fund is designed to do.

The fund is presented by Dubai RDI, an initiative of Dubai Future Foundation, to connect applied research with government- and industry-defined resilience challenges and move promising technologies toward deployment readiness.

3

Challenge areas

Cognitive Cities, Health & Life Sciences, and Environmental Science.

TRL 4–7

Development range

The stated focus is applied research progressing toward real-world deployment.

2 stages

Application route

A Letter of Intent comes first; shortlisted teams may then submit a full proposal.

Up to AED 2m

Published project ceiling

A phased structure supports proof of concept followed by pilot implementation and validation.

A research-led consortium model

The published framework requires a Dubai-based university or research institution to lead. It also requires at least one Dubai government or UAE industry partner, with a three-way university, government, and industry consortium described as the preferred model.

  • Dubai research institution leads the application
  • Relevant principal investigator and research capability
  • Government or industry challenge partner
  • At least half of grant expenditure within Dubai

Program terms, challenge briefs, deadlines, and availability can change. Prospective applicants should verify the current guidelines and application window directly with Dubai RDI before acting.

WHERE COOLGRID MAY ALIGN

A cooling challenge can be framed as applied resilience research.

CoolGrid’s potential relevance would depend on the live challenge brief and an eligible lead institution. A credible proposal would begin with an operator’s real problem—not with a predetermined technology rollout.

01

Cognitive Cities

Test whether connected operational data and predictive models can improve decisions across cooling-intensive urban assets.

02

Environmental Science

Examine how cooling demand, heat conditions, and energy pressure interact within a defined operational setting.

03

Deployment readiness

Advance a bounded prototype through technical validation, operator review, and evidence from a controlled pilot.

These are alignment hypotheses only. The current fund guidelines—not this page—determine whether a CoolGrid-related proposal is in scope.

A POSSIBLE COOLGRID PATHWAY

From consortium to evidence, with a decision gate at every stage.

The pathway below is a proposed project structure. It is not an approved application, award, or official fund process.

01

Form the consortium

Identify an eligible Dubai research lead, a government or industry challenge owner, an operating site, and CoolGrid’s technical role.

Evidence gate

Aligned team + collaboration intent

02

Define the challenge

Select one material cooling-resilience question, confirm available data, and agree measurable research and operational criteria.

Evidence gate

Challenge brief + validation protocol

03

Build the proof of concept

Connect a minimum viable dataset, establish baselines, calibrate models, and test signal quality with engineers and researchers.

Evidence gate

Working prototype + evidence review

04

Run an operator-led pilot

Evaluate forecasts and recommendations alongside normal operations, without automatic control or assumed savings.

Evidence gate

Pilot findings + limitations

05

Make the scale decision

Assess technical value, operational usability, governance, integration needs, and the case to refine, scale, or stop.

Evidence gate

Evidence-led next-step decision

CONSORTIUM ROLES

Each partner contributes a distinct form of credibility.

Research lead

Dubai university or research institution

Lead the research design, application, methodology, and independent evaluation.

Challenge owner

Government entity or UAE industry partner

Define the resilience need, operating constraints, and decision criteria.

Site operator

Cooling or infrastructure operations team

Enable approved data access, provide engineering context, and assess usability.

Technology partner

CoolGrid Dubai

Configure the cooling-intelligence layer, models, interface, and technical documentation.

WHAT A GRANT OR PILOT COULD SHAPE

Build the evidence before making the scale claim.

  • Validated data-readiness assessment
  • Cooling-demand forecasting baseline
  • Asset-risk signal evaluation
  • Operator workflow and usability findings
  • Energy and resilience measurement framework
  • Cybersecurity, access, and integration requirements
  • Evidence for a refine, scale, or stop decision

Not assumed in advance

  • Guaranteed savings
  • Guaranteed equipment-failure prediction
  • Customer deployment
  • Government endorsement
  • Grant eligibility or award
  • Commercial return
